Symbiosis Hemp Clothing vs Fast Fashion

The $1.5 Trillion Fashion Industry is responsible for 1.7 billion tons of CO2, making up 10% of all human-caused carbon emissions. Additionally, it’s second only to agriculture in terms of water consumption. Surprisingly, even hydraulic fracturing uses less water in comparison. According to figures from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP Established in 1972), it takes 3,781 liters of water to make a pair of jeans. Join us in putting an end to this nonsense and make a more conscious switch to the most sustainable, healing, carbon negative choice Symbiosis Hemp Clothing.

Breathability and Comfort

Highly Breathable Natural Structure: Hemp fabric’s natural fiber structure allows for excellent air circulation, making it highly breathable and ideal for warm climates. Air permeability measurements for hemp canvas are significantly higher than for cotton denim (e.g., 500 mm/s for hemp canvas) (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023)

Hypoallergenic Properties

Skin-Friendly & Antibacterial: Promotes Better Hygiene “Hemp fabric has anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic properties, so clothes made are very resistant to odor development and are suitable for sensitive skin due to their non-irritating properties” (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika., 2023)

Antioxidant & UV Protection

Natural Skin Protection: “Hemp apparel and functional textiles create the optimal environment for wearers, ensuring physiological comfort in everyday life and positive effects on the skin thanks to antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Hemp fibers could produce textiles with barrier activity against UV radiation due to their unique chemical composition containing lignin and phenolic acids” (Zimniewska, 2022).

High Durability & Superior Strength: Ensures Long-Lasting Wear

  • Hemp fibers exhibit a tensile strength of 350-800 MPa, approximately three times stronger than cotton, which provides long-lasting and robust clothing options (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).
  • Hemp’s strong fibers show a lower mass loss in wear tests compared to similar textiles, highlighting its potential for extended durability and service life (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).
  • Hemp maintains its integrity far longer than polyester, particularly in applications where robustness is critical, due to its superior tensile strength and durability (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).

Biodegradability

Hemp is a fully biodegradable material. This means no long term microplastics! No endocrine disrupting chemicals!

High Absorbency

Due to the structure of the hemp fiber, clothing made with it showcase how much of a sponge hemp is. More than just water! Including sweat and air to move through this material and cool you down and wick away sweat!

Eco-Conscious Production

Minimal Chemical Residues: “Hemp requires less water and fewer pesticides than cotton and can be grown without herbicides or fungicides. This work discusses the sustainability of hemp while exploring the use of hemp fabric in the textile garment fashion industry as part of cotton substitution” (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023)

Longevity and Softness

Hemp is strong, durable, and becomes softer with each wash. All while still maintaining the durability that the clothing always had!

Why Polyester Should be Banned

Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Energy Consumption

CO2 Emissions

Hemp fabric is fully biodegradable, breaking down naturally in about 3-6 months when composted, compared to hundreds of years for synthetic fibers like polyester (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).

Water Impact

Water Usage

“The fashion industry annually uses 79 trillion liters of water.” (Zajac, 2023).

Wastewater Pollution

“The fashion industry is responsible for roughly 20% of industrial water pollution.” (Zajac, 2023).

“Washing processes of synthetic clothes contribute significantly to microplastic pollution.” (Šaravanja et al., 2022).

Microplastic Pollution

Release and Impact

“The fashion industry annually contributes roughly 500,000 tonnes of oceanic microplastic pollution.” (Zajac, 2023).

“Microfibers generated during washing of synthetic textiles are a significant contributor to microplastic pollution in marine environments.” (Lant et al., 2020).

“A single garment can release more than 1900 fibers per wash cycle, and almost all garments emit more than 100 fibers per liter of wastewater.” (Šaravanja et al., 2022).

“Only 9% of the microfibres were captured by the wastewater treatment plant, with the remaining 91% being released into the environment.” (Hazlehurst et al., 2023).

Persistence in Ecosystems

“Particularly long chains of PFAS are highly mobile when introduced to an aquatic environment, bioaccumulative, are not removed by conventional wastewater treatment, and most are non-biodegradable.” (Zajac, 2023).

Production and Global Impact

Environmental Shifts in Production

“Fiber production for textile manufacturing has doubled in the past 20 years.” (Palacios-Mateo et al., 2021).

Environmental Presence of Microplastics

“Microplastics have been detected in rivers, canals, lakes, seas and oceans.” (Palacios-Mateo et al., 2021).

Waste Management

Textile Waste

“Over 92 million tonnes of textile waste and unsold products end up in landfill or burnt.” (Zajac, 2023).

General Pollution and Chemical Impact

CO2 and Chemical Pollution

“Chemical pollution has the potential to pose one of the largest environmental threats to humanity, with an estimated release as high as 220 billion tonnes per year.” (Zajac, 2023).

Dyeing Processes

“Approximately 20% of global water pollution is attributed to the dyeing and finishing of textile products.” (Palacios-Mateo et al., 2021).

Recycling Limiations

“Globally, 22% of plastic waste is either mismanaged or uncollected, 49% is landfilled, about 19% is set on fire, and less than 9% is recycled.” (Dube et al., 2023).

Health and Safety Concerns

Chemical Exposure

“Factory workers in the textile industry have a higher than average prevalence of respiratory diseases and allergies.” (Palacios-Mateo et al., 2021).

Carcinogenic Risks

“High concentrations of better-known PFAS compounds may lead to increased cholesterol levels, decrease vaccine response in children, increased risk of high blood pressure in pregnant women, and increased risk of certain cancers.” (Zajac, 2023).

Chemical Use in Manufacturing

“More than 15,000 chemicals can be used in the manufacturing process of clothing, including dyes, solvents, detergents, flame retardants, stain repellents, softeners, and carriers.” (Zajac, 2023).

Sustainability and Environmental Benefits

Biodegradability

Decomposition

Hemp fabric is fully biodegradable, breaking down naturally in about 3-6 months when composted, compared to hundreds of years for synthetic fibers like polyester (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).

Waste Reduction

Hemp fabric promotes a significant reduction in landfill waste due to its compostable nature, breaking down naturally in about 3-6 months when composted, compared to hundreds of years for synthetic fibers like polyester (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).

Water Consumption

Efficiency

“Hemp has a shorter growing cycle than cotton, which means it can be harvested more quickly and with less water consumption. It is a renewable resource that can be harvested annually without depleting the soil or damaging the ecosystem” (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).

Soil Health

Phytoremediation

“The additional benefits of hemp growing are the suppression of weed growth, anti-erosion, reclamation properties and the ability to drain the soil of poisonous substances and heavy metals” (Zimniewska, 2022).

Low Pesticide Usage

Unlike cotton, it requires water only during drought and is more resilient against parasites. Consequently, it requires fewer pesticides and can be grown without herbicides or fungicides, making it a more sustainable choice for textile production.” (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).

Erosion Prevention

“Hemp cultivation protects agricultural areas against the loss of biodiversity, improves the productivity of the soil, removes heavy metals and can be used for soil remediation and reclamation in industrial areas” (Zimniewska, 2022).

Carbon Footprint

CO2 Absorption

“One hectare of industrial hemp can absorb 22 tonnes of CO2 per hectare. It is possible to grow two crops per year so absorption is doubled. Hemp’s rapid growth (grows to 4 metres in 100 days) makes it one of the fastest CO2-to-biomass conversion tools available, more efficient than agro-forestry” (Vosper, 2021).

Carbon Sequestration

Hemp absorbs more CO2 per hectare annually compared to most tree species, aligning with global carbon reduction goals (Sorrentino G. 2021).

Energy Use

“Hemp cultivation requires significantly lower energy input than synthetic fiber production, such as polyester, leading to a reduction in overall industrial energy consumption by up to 50%” (Zimniewska, 2022).

Renewability

Annual Harvest

Hemp can be harvested annually, producing approximately 2.5 times more fiber per hectare than cotton. (Karypidis, Papadaki, & Stalika, 2023).
